Dear Applicant,
Thank you very much for your interest in the post of Headteacher at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School. I hope that you find this information pack informative and that it will encourage you to apply for the position at this school.
We have a superb site with a playground and a large playing field which includes a productive garden, forest school area and pond area. Our new creative curriculum is engaging and exciting including our Forest School activities which are developing across the school. We opened our new outdoor classroom in July, which was funded by our enthusiastic PTA enabling children to learn outside, whatever the weather. In addition, our school buildings have been renovated and remodelled over the last few years and are in an excellent state of repair.
Everyone at St. Joseph’s is extremely proud of the school and we are committed to its friendly and inclusive environment in which all members of the school community are valued. In March 2009 Ofsted said that ‘A loving ethos fills the school, promoting harmony and high levels of pastoral care.’
As a result of recent work in school, which involved pupils, parents, staff, governors and the wider parish, we have produced a new vision and values statement:

At St Joseph’s Catholic School ... we share God’s love ... we learn together ... we achieve together ... we celebrate our uniqueness.

With all this in mind the governors are seeking to appoint a headteacher who is a practising Catholic for whom faith and spirituality is central and who has the vision, energy and enthusiasm to lead us in ensuring that this is reflected through the daily life of the school.
In addition you will need to be an inspirational leader who will maintain the progress we have achieved since our ‘Satisfactory’ Ofsted inspection in March 2009; someone committed to raising standards in teaching and learning and to build productive relationships with our children, their parents and carers, our staff, governors and the wider parish community.
We are aware of the challenges ahead and to the right candidate, this post will be an extremely rewarding experience, an opportunity to contribute and really make a difference.
We will be looking for applications that demonstrate impact and achievement in each area of the enclosed person specification as well as:

  • Your reasons for applying to be Headteacher at St Joseph’s;

  • Your views on what makes a good headteacher; and

  • Your vision for leading improved teaching and learning in our school’.

Please ensure that you include lots of real life examples of your strengths and talents in your covering letter which should be no more than two pages in length, either word-processed or handwritten.
Your on-line or paper Catholic Education Service leadership application form and accompanying letter should be returned to Angie Beale in the Somerset County Council Recruitment Team and arrive no later than 5.00pm on Wednesday 22 February.
Shortlisting candidates for interview will take place on 5 March and if you are invited to the selection process we will contact you on 6 March. Interviews will be held on 19 and 20 March. References will be taken up following listing; therefore it is important that you inform your referees, including your current employer, of your application.
Visits to our school are strongly recommended; we are confident that you will be impressed by what we have to offer. To arrange a visit, or if you have any questions or need more information, please do not hesitate to contact our school.
I would like to thank you again for your interest in the post and I look forward to receiving your application.
Yours sincerely
Helen Scott
