Flash Crash CourseAbout Flash:1) It is a powerful web development tool that has eveolved into a powerful multimedia tool that is used for websites, CD-ROMs, Presentations, Animation and lots more.2) Designed For Web: +Animations are small, download fast and colorsafe +Flash can smooth and resize to fit viewer's screen +viewable on numerous platforms(PC, Mac, linux, Solaris, Web TV, PDA and more.)3) Flash = vector based: "Is everyone familiar w/ raster v. vector graphics?" +Flash content looks sleek because of vector graphics +Vector = objects that are defined mathematically (ie: "Make circle w/ radius of 6") +Raster = Bitmap = Info stored for each and every pixel (Demo BMP) + smaller file sizes +Scalable w/o jaggies4) Flash now true multimedia tool:Can make content w/ sound, graphics, pictures, video and have it interactive. +All these increase file size but if built correctly can still download fairly quickly and is stunning. +Flash also has the ability to stream content.5) Flash = easy to use: You will need to come to class, study the book & practice but it will not be long before you have mastered the fundamentals.6) Flash = versatile: +Flash content works well on multiple platforms, in most browsers & even streams well over slow connections (if built properly) +Can even create stand-alone player (projector)7) Flash = Compatible: it can handle numerous file formats and even import directly from several other graphics applications like: Fireworks, Freehand, Photoshop, Illustrator, and more.Flash: 99% Bad - Jakob Nielsenfrom: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20001029.htmlAbout 99% of the time, the presence of Flash on a website constitutes a usability disease. Although there are rare occurrences of good Flash design (it even adds value on occasion), the use of Flash typically lowers usability. In most cases, we would be better off if these multimedia objects were removed.Flash tends to degrade websites for three reasons: it encourages design abuse, it breaks with the Web's fundamental interaction principles, and it distracts attention from the site's core value. He has since refined his position on Flash a little. When Good Flash Goes BadFlash is 99% evil or Flash is 99% good? Flash is a tool.from: http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/when-good-flash-goes-bad.htmlFlash is a tool and like any tool it can be misused if it's used incorrectly. If you're cutting down a tree for firewood, a chainsaw is a good tool for the job. If you're trying to taper the leg of a table, a chainsaw is not the right woodworking tool.Designers -- like woodworkers -- often make two fundamental mistakes. They confuse:CAN with SHOULD. Yes, you can use a chainsaw to taper a table leg, but should you?WANT with NEED. People want a Ferrari to drive to work, but they need an automobile. While there are no ironclad rules when you should or shouldn't use Flash, a little common sense can be helpful. Ask yourself the following questions:If I use Flash on my site, will it cause people to write me checks with lots of zeroes in front of the decimal point? Can the same effect be achieved with HTML and graphics?Does Flash get in the way of the user such as increased wait time or visitors who don't have the plugin?Has any important customer called up and asked, "Why aren't you using Flash on your site?"Do the people suggesting Flash have any vested interest? (Flash designers)Do the people suggesting Flash work in the marketing department? (Marketing people, like myself, are mesmerized by shiny things.)There's something about Flash that causes otherwise normal people to use other bad design techniques they wouldn't normally be inclined to do if they were working with HTML like:Use Splash pagesUse "Mystery Meat Navigation" -- especially the animated kind.Making text really, really small.Putting background music on the pageBasic Design Principles:Use good basic design principles in everything you create:Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and ProximityOne of my favorite books on the topic is:In The Non-Designer's Design Book, 2nd Edition, best-selling author Robin Williams turns her attention to the basic principles of good design and typography. All you have to do is follow her clearly explained concepts, and you'll begin producing more sophisticated, professional, and interesting pages immediately. Humor-infused, jargon-free prose interspersed with design exercises, quizzes, illustrations, and dozens of examples make learning a snap—which is just what audiences have come to expect from this best-selling author. --Link to Paperback edition. Introduction to FlashFlash Terminology:Read a book on Flash! Get familiar with all the terms as quickly as you can.FLA, SWF, Keyframe, Frame, Stage, Layers, Timeline, Scrubbing, Playhead, Panels, Inspector, Scenes, Actions, Symbol, MovieClip, dot syntax, etc. What difference = between fla and swf, how to quickly publish, Basic Items:1) Timeline: holds the movies frames, layers and scenes + Dock/Undock/Hide + Frames - anim. is made up of series of frames, image changes slightly in each frame, when done quickly gives the illusion of movement, done well it looks smooth (esp. w/higher frame rate - but that taxes the users processor) + Layers - think of as layers of transparencies + To begin we will only create 1 frame movies - static - drawing2) Stage: where the movie is displayed - think of as your screen + Many properties can be changed by: - Property Inspector ( w/ nothing selected ) - Document Properties Dialog Box ( CTRL-J ) - Units of Measure: - Size os stage: Can set to anything or use - MATCH:printer, contents def. - BG color - Frame Rate: determines speed of your movie ( default is 12 ), most live action is 30 fps. - Info Tab - Grids - good for positioning graphics : view>grid>show/edit/snap - Rulers - - Snapping - can be very useful & also really annoying (snap ring) 3) Work Area: the gray area all around the stage ( place to work on graphics, animations ) ZOOM: %, view/ magnification, tool, ZOOM OUT : tool, double click hand4) Tools: Contains Flash's drawing tools and other you will need to create and manipulate graphics view, hide, relocate, dock/undock5) Panels: windows that stay open on desktop for quick access (contain tools) + open/close + collapse/expand + resize + grouped panels + customizing ++ property Inspector context sensitive super panel info & choices change depending on what is selected 6) Library: Where you manage all of your assets: graphics, bitmaps, MCs, sound, components

Introduction to Flash's drawing toolsRecommend a Wacom tablet - cheapest around $89Preferences: + Illustrator, Corel, Freehand - Flash can import. However, I prefer you to draw w/ Flash: to get used to the tools and makes smaller files. + By Hand: can scan in, import and then trace - I have a resource on this if you are interested.Simple Graphics, complex graphics, Groups, SymbolsGOLDEN RULE: if you can create it in Flash, do so; it will save file sizeStrokes & Fills: DemoStrokes and fills interact differently in Flash than they do in other drawing apps.Touring the TOOLBOX: contains tools for drawing, editing, and manipulating graphic elements in Flash. Note the 3 different sections: Tools, Colors and Modifyers.LINE(N): great for drawing perfectly straight lines. + hold down shift to constrain: horiz, vert, 45 deg. + Setting Stroke Attributes: set in 3 different places Property Insp., Toolbox, color mixer panel + Reshaping lines w/ arrow toolOVAL(O)/RECTANGLE(R): both work about the same. Can draw shape as outline, filled shape or both. + Perfect square/circle - shift key + Corner radius for rectangles (0-999 points) + Note: line and fill remain separate elements - cutout effectPENCIL(Y): offers two freeform modes help you draw smooth and neat + Straighten - shape recognition edit amount of help in preferences + Smooth + Ink mode + Draw lines - note what happens when lines intersect + Weight, Style, Color + Reshaping lines w/ arrow tool + Creating additional points while reshaping - [ctrl] dragPEN(P): Bezier tool - lets you place defining points and then adjust the curve of line connecting them. + Straight Lines - end open path: double-click last point + Closed path: little circle indicates, double-click just inside to fill +Curved segments - click and drag & click and drag - handlesPAINT BUCKET(K): fills & gradients - bucket lets fill closed shape + Can fill w/ solids, gradients & even bitmaps + Gap option - relative to magnification + Lock Fill option + Fill Transform TOOL*** + Show how to make custom gradient and modify it (go easy - increases file size - be careful animating - taxes processor)INK BOTTLE(S): works just like bucket; only effects lines + Adds stroke too - click inside/outside edge of fillEYE DROPPER(I): Allows you to sample fill/line color and styleBRUSH TOOL(B): Free-flowing swashes of color, simulate paintbrush, really freeform fills + no stroke around + variety of brush sizes and tips; more variety than appears - not scale + used w/ pressure-sensitive tablet varies thickness + Cover all the options: mode, pressure, size, shape, lock fill + Lock fill - for painting w/ gradients - on- appears of same gradient + Use smooth/straighten for cleaner lines (even reduces file size - fewer vectors) + great for highlights, shadowsTEXT: creates blocks of editable text; horiz. or vert.; can apply variety of attributes to. Three types of text in Flash: static, input and dynamic. For now only deal with static which is strictly a graphic element. Later will discuss the other two. + Note: resize handle top right corner of txt box. + Vertical and horizontal: rotate button in inspector + Can adjust: font, size, style, alignment and tracking from panel or prop. inspector. + Text color is considered a fill + Tracking = amount of space between letters & words + Kerning = affects space between a pair of letters, just leave auto kerning on + Breaking Txt apart: - [ctrl] B (once) - breaks into single letter txt boxes - distributed to layers later for animation - [ctrl]B (twice) - breaks apart completely into fills - cannot edit as txt. Much more on text laterMODIFYING THE SIMPLE GRAPHICS + Multiple copies using [Alt] Drag + Repositioning - eyeball it, or numerically with panel + nudge w/arrow keys - power nudge + Cut - [ctrl] X - copies to pasteboard + Copy - [ctrl] C - + Paste - [ctrl] V - pastes center; also a paste-in-place + Smooth + Straighten + Convert lines to fillsSELECTION TOOLS: note blue bounding box for a selected item, white dots if selected + Multiple selections = [shift] click; again interaction lines fills - cutout + [ctrl] A - selects all + Clicking on empty area of stage or work area deselcts all Black arrow(V) - select tool + Creating additional points while reshaping - [ctrl] drag White arrow(A) - subselect tool - only for selecting & modifing anchor points & bezier + Convert to curve- [Alt] drag the point + Delete point - use pen tool note the plus and minus Lasso( ) - lets you select odd areas of simple shapes + Magic wand - select a color range - tolerance - use w/ bitmaps + Polygon modeFREE TRANSFORM: New tool; good for resizing and skewing freely + use TRANSFORM panel for more exact transformations + Note: element model can change transformation point + Flip + Distort Modifyer - [Shift] Click + Envelope - raw shapes - no groups or symbolsERASER: several modes; size shape, + Normal - + Fills - + Lines - + Selected Fills - + Inside FAUCET MODECOLOR: + Create custom color, adding to swatch + Creating gradients - radial, linear + Color sets - for consistent color schemes + loading a set of colors
