This activity is very structured because I want you to focus most of your attention on two things (1) becoming comfortable with the Keynote app and (2) structuring a concept lesson using an analytical approach. Concepts are the very essence of every content discipline; they are a way of organizing data to make sense of the information that constantly bombards us.
Task: Construct a slideshow of the concept “triangle” using the iPad app Keynote.

Provided: There are nine images; 4 images each of examples and non-examples; 1 image labeled Triangle Graphic Organizer. All of these should be in your DropBox. From your iPad DropBox, open each and tap Save Photo to place in your photo library.

  • Slide 01: Start a new slideshow in Keynote by tapping the + symbol at the upper left when you open Keynote and then tap Create Presentation.

    • Choose the theme named White by tapping it.

    • Delete the image with tap, Delete.

    • Drag the larger text frame and center it at the top of the slide.

      • Double-tap and enter the text Triangle.

      • Tap the text frame; then tap the icon at top right.

        • Under the Style tab, tap Style Options and choose a fill color.

        • Under the Text tab, tap on the font type (Helvetica, in this case) and choose a color for the text.

    • Double-tap the smaller text frame and enter the text Examples.

      • Resize the text frame by dragging with the handles so that it is only about one-half the original height and width.

      • Double-tap and copy the Examples frame. Tap just to the right of the frame you just copied and tap Paste.

        • Edit the name of the new frame so it reads Non-Examples. Edit by selecting the text frame and then dragging to the left, as shown at right .

        • Align the two frames horizontally; then with one finger on the selected frame, tap the other frame with a second finger.

        • With both frames selected, drag to a position just below the main title frame. Click Done at the upper right.

    • Now we’re going to display the first triangle on this slide. Tap the icon and locate the triangle examples in Camera Roll. Tap a triangle and drag it to a position just below and to the left of the Examples label on your slideshow; resize by dragging on a handle.

      • Now we’re going to animate the triangle to emphasize the item we’re most interested in the user observing.

        • Select the triangle; then tap the icon. Choose Transitions and Builds. We’re going to prepare a “build in” so tap “build in.” Scroll down to Flash Bulbs and tap the selection. Click Done and run your slideshow by tapping the right-arrow icon at the upper right of the screen. Tap the screen once to observe the effect.

        • Use Cube animation for the slide by first tapping the slide in the area on the left side of the screen. Then choose Cube.

      • We’re only going to show one new example or non-example on each slide but we want the examples and non-examples from the previous slide to show on the next slide also. Therefore, we need to copy the two labels and the example on slide 01.

        • Tap one of the three items; then with one finger on the selected item, tap the other two items with a second finger. Release all fingers and tap one of the selected items and choose Copy.

  • Slide 02:

    • Click the + symbol at the bottom left to display slide two (plain White). Tap once and Paste. Now drag the selected items to the top of the slide.

      • Change the “build in” of the triangle to None.

    • Now display non-example 03 and place just below the non-examples label. (Why this non-example?)

    • Use Cube animation for the slide.

    • Prior to setting the “build in” to Flash Bulbs, tap the screen and use copy all to select all 4 objects on the screen; then paste on slide 03.

    • Now set the “build in” of the non-example on slide 02 to Flash Bulbs

  • Slide 03:

    • Continue the procedure in slide 02 above for slides 3-7; remember the Cube animation for slides 3-7; slide 8 will use the Doorway animation; slide 13 will use the Dissolve animation.

    • Add another non-example on slide 03.

  • Slide 04

    • Add another example

  • Slide 05

    • Add another non-example

  • Slide 06

    • Add another example

  • Slide 07

    • Add another example

  • Slide 08

    • Add another non-example

    • Use the Doorway animation for this slide

  • Slide 09

    • Choose a frame style with a text frame at the top. Enter the words Teacher Help into this text frame.

    • With the frame selected, tap the icon and choose Advanced.

    • Choose Interactive Hyperlinks.

    • Tap the URL tab and enter this link: mathworld.wolfram.com/Triangle.html

    • Insert the graphic Triangle graphic organizer.

    • Below the graphic, enter the text The End with a “build in” of Appear.

    • Use the Dissolve animation for this slide.
