Extended Response Questions. Choose one question from each of the four units and prepare a well constructed, paragraph form answer on the foolscap paper. Therefore, you will be answering a total of four questions. (Application & Communication)
UNIT 1 - Biochemistry
1. Pyruvate is available as a dietary supplement. Explain the possible results of adding pyruvate to your diet.
2. Snowboarders apply wax to the bottom of their snowboards in order to improve the performance of their boards. Considering the physical and chemical properties of waxes and snow, explain how waxing a snowboard would be useful. Now, relate this concept to why waterfowl like ducks produce a waxy substance in their feathers.
UNIT 2 - Metabolic Processes
3. You have been asked by a company that manufactures greenhouses to act as a consultant as to what kind of features their greenhouse should have in order to maximize the crop yield for a customer who wishes to grow tomatoes for the commercial market. Base your recommendations on your understanding of the physiology of photosynthesis and any practical concerns you have.
4. You are a biochemist studying the action of yeast in a fermentation apparatus that will be used to maximize the alcohol produced in a microbrewery. Describe the conditions and apparatus that you would use for this purpose. Explain your reasoning.
UNIT 3 - Homeostasis
1. Meal A consists of mostly simple carbohydrates with some proteins. Meal B consists of mostly complex carbohydrates with some proteins. Compare the glucose levels you would expect to find soon after eating each meal. Describe how each meal could affect the feedback loops created by the antagonistic hormones insulin and glucagon.
2. The action of many psychoactive drugs can be explained in terms of neurotransmitters. Valium, a depressant, interacts with gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA) transmitter-receptor sites on postsynaptic membranes. The greater the number of receptor sites that are occupied, the more effective the neurotransmitter. LSD and mescaline, both hallucinogenic drugs, are thought to interact with the receptor sites of serotonin (a neurotransmitter). Draw a diagram to show how Valium and hallucinogenic drugs work. What dangers would exist from taking drugs that interfere with naturally produced neurotransmitter chemicals?


UNIT 4 - Molecular Genetics
1. The genetic code is universal. With the exception of a few organisms, all living things use the same code to build proteins. List possible ramifications to the biotechnology industry and to the theory of evolution if this were not the case.

2. Bacteria are ideal organisms in use as “factories” for the manufacture of various genetic products. List the characteristics of bacteria that make them ideal for genetic engineering. Be sure to consider a wide variety of advantages, including scientific and economic.
